Welcome

This is my web site for sharing sermons, music, Blog, writings, and more.

I'm the pastor of First English Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas.
Visit the church's website:  www.felcaustin.org

I'm in the process of adding sermons from my years of preaching, one for each Sunday of the three-year Revised Common Lectionary.

If you'd like to see my most recent sermons, and leave comments on them, go to my Blog.

I'm also adding my musical compositions, including the Christ Liturgy Contemplative Eucharist, and some meditative songs.

About Me

I am the pastor of First English Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas, since 2008, where I also served as intern pastor in 1991-1992.

I graduated from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 1993.

I have served two other parishes:
First Lutheran Church in Burnet (1994-1999), and
Christ Lutheran Church of Alamo Heights, in San Antonio (1999-2008).

My undergraduate degree is in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois in Urbana.

I am married to Kathryn Coffey, who is an architect with her own business she runs out of our home, specializing in home remodeling and new residential construction. We have two sons, Colin and Liam.

My major areas of interest in ministry are
  • the ongoing development of liturgy and ritual
  • Old Testament theology
  • contemporary relevance of a theology of the cross
  • adult spiritual formation and catechumenate
  • contemplative prayer
  • masculine spirituality and male initiation rites for adults and adolescents (I'm part of the Men's Rites of Passage leadership team in Texas: http://www.cacradicalgrace.org/menaslearnerselders and www.texasmalespirituality.org
  • and exploring spiritual and theological themes in film.
In my free time (when is that??), I enjoy playing piano, home remodeling, brewing beer, computers and technology, writing poetry, and composing liturgical music and hymns.

I try very hard not to miss episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.

The painting to the left on this web site was done by the men's group at Christ Lutheran Church, Alamo Heights, during a retreat on The Four Male Archetypes: King, Warrior, Magician, Lover.  To see the whole painting right-click on the image and select "View."

The artwork on the sermon pages is by Steve Erspamer, liturgical artist.
